How to Protect the Paint on an Exotic or High-End Car

The best way to protect an exotic or high-end car’s paint is to have it professionally decontaminated and corrected, seal it with a long-rated ceramic coating, and keep it out of automatic car washes for good. A coating handles gloss, UV and easy washing, while paint protection film is what helps against rock chips, so many owners use both.

Why high-end paint deserves extra care

Exotic and luxury paint is expensive and difficult to repaint well, and an original factory finish matters for value. Many of these cars also come in dark or vivid colors that show every swirl, and they often spend long stretches parked, which invites dust and careless wiping. The goal is to keep the original paint looking its best for as long as you own the car.

Who touches the car matters most

The wrong wash or polish can damage paint permanently. At AquaLux, every car is done by owner Landon Crawford personally, with no crews or subcontractors. He has spent nearly a decade detailing, and his gallery includes a Ferrari, a Porsche 911 GT3 RS, a Lamborghini Huracán, a Lexus LFA, a Maserati MC20, a Bentley Continental GT and a classic Aston Martin.

One Google reviewer with a Cayenne GTS recommended him especially to people with very expensive cars who worry about who they hand the keys to. That review and others are below.

A protection plan, step by step

  1. Inspection under light. Landon checks the paint’s condition and asks how the car is driven and stored.
  2. Decontamination. A careful hand wash, chemical decontamination and clay bar remove bonded contamination.
  3. Paint correction. Machine polishing matched to the paint, with a 2-step correction available by request for heavier defects.
  4. Ceramic coating. Applied panel by panel, with 3, 6, 8, 9 or 10-year options. Ask about glass and wheels.
  5. Aftercare and maintenance. A walk-through at pickup, and Monthly Exterior Maintenance if you want it handled for you.

Everything from step 2 to step 4 is included in the Ceramic Coating Package. The work is done at Landon’s Blue Ridge location, out of the weather. See How much does ceramic coating cost? for how quotes work.

Ceramic coating or paint protection film?

They solve different problems. A ceramic coating adds deep gloss and slickness and helps resist UV, bird droppings, bugs and chemicals. It does not stop rock chips. Paint protection film is a clear physical layer that helps absorb chips and light scuffs, usually on the nose, hood, mirrors and rocker panels.

Many owners put film on the high-impact areas and a coating on the rest of the car. If you are weighing film, ask Landon how a coating fits with it. He has also removed old film: one reviewer had him take 10-year-old paint protection film off a Porsche.

Storage and everyday habits

  • Garage the car when you can, and keep it away from sprinklers and sap-dropping trees.
  • Never dry-wipe dust. Use a proper waterless or detail spray and clean microfiber, or wash it.
  • Only use a car cover on a clean car, and choose a soft, breathable one.
  • Remove bird droppings and bugs quickly, especially in summer heat.
  • Leave extra following distance behind trucks and gravel haulers on the highway; chips come from what is ahead of you.

Washing an exotic

Hand wash only, with the two-bucket method, a pH-neutral shampoo and separate tools for wheels. Use forced air to dry grilles, badges and intakes so water does not drip and spot. Never take an exotic through an automatic wash. The full routine is in How to care for a ceramic-coated car.

Before a show, a sale or long storage

Timing matters. If the car is headed to a show or a cars-and-coffee, book correction and protection with enough lead time that you are not rushing the job the week before. If you are selling, corrected and protected paint photographs dramatically better and gives a buyer confidence in how the car was kept. If the car is going into storage for a season, put it away clean and protected, because dirt and droppings left sitting on paint are harder to remove later.

Whatever the reason, a free 20-minute consultation is the easiest way to plan it. Landon will look at the car, ask about your timeline and recommend only what it needs.

Classics and collector cars

Older paint needs an even gentler approach, and the honest answer is sometimes “this is as good as it can safely get.” Landon has restored the shine on a 24-year-old Boxster, a 1959 VW Beetle that had been parked outside for years and a 1960s split-window Corvette. He will inspect your car and tell you what is realistic before any polishing starts.

“Landon with Aqualux Auto Detailing did a great job on our 2018 Cayenne GTS. He was able to remove the scratches and swirls that were easily seen on the black paint and where needed spent a little extra attention to make the car look as perfect as it could for a 4 year old vehicle. Not only was I impressed with his detailing knowledge and abilities but also his politeness and timeliness. I highly recommend his business to anyone, but especially for those of you that have very expensive cars and are worried about leaving them in the hands of just anyone that claims to be a detailer. Landon is the real deal!”

“…This Boxster was by far the most challenging. It’s a 24 year old car and that paint was suffering!! Lots of water spots and scratches and just aging paint. He put his ALL into this car! When I saw it, my jaw dropped! Literally could not believe the transformation…”

“Landon removed the 10 year old paint protection film on my Porsche and did a fantastic job. His attention to detail is second to none, and the amount of effort he put in was just amazing. You can tell when someone loves what they do, and it’s obvious that Landon loves what he does. I cannot recommend him highly enough, and he is now (and forevermore) my detail guy.”
