Is Paint Correction Worth It?

Paint correction is worth it if your paint looks dull, hazy or covered in fine swirls in direct sun, or if you are about to put a ceramic coating on the car. It levels a very thin layer of clear coat to remove those defects, which brings back depth and gloss that no wax or spray can fake.

What paint correction actually does

Most of the marks people notice sit in the clear coat, the transparent top layer of the paint. Swirl marks from tunnel washes and dirty towels, light scratches, water-spot etching and haze all scatter light, which makes the color look flat. Correction uses a machine polisher and abrasive polish to level the clear coat so it reflects light cleanly again.

That is the key difference from a glaze or a “cleaner wax.” Fillers can hide swirls for a few washes, then they wash away and the swirls come back. Correction removes the defects instead of covering them.

Signs your car would benefit

  • Circular, spiderweb-like scratches that show up around the sun or a flashlight
  • Dull or cloudy color, especially on black, dark blue and dark gray paint
  • Water spots that do not come off with a normal wash
  • Light scratches that you can see but cannot catch with a fingernail
  • A used car whose paint was never cared for
  • You are planning a ceramic coating, which locks in whatever is underneath it

Check your own paint in two minutes

  1. Wash the car, or at least one panel, so dirt is not hiding anything.
  2. Look at the hood or a door in direct sun, or shine a phone flashlight at it in a dark garage.
  3. Circles or fine webs around the light are swirls. Haze and dull patches suggest oxidation or etching.
  4. Run a fingernail gently across any scratch. If it catches, correction alone probably will not remove it.

When it is not the right fix

An honest answer sometimes means not polishing.

  • Scratches through the clear coat to the color or primer cannot be polished out. If your fingernail catches, it is usually too deep to remove completely.
  • Expecting perfection from a 1-step. A 1-step polish removes roughly 50 to 75% of swirls and scratches. Deeper defects need a 2-step correction, which is available by request.
  • You only want it clean and protected for a few months. The Gold Exterior Only Detail (from $500) adds a clay bar and an 8-month paint sealant without correction.

Landon inspects the paint under light first and will tell you what is realistic before you spend anything.

1-step vs 2-step correction at AquaLux

The Platinum Polishing Package is a premium 1-step polish on a dual-action polisher. It includes chemical and clay-bar decontamination, removes roughly 50 to 75% of swirls and scratches, protects the trim for up to a year and finishes with a premium wax or sealant. It takes 5 to 7 hours and starts at $800 for cars, $900 for small SUVs and $1,000 for large SUVs and trucks. Prices vary with paint condition.

A 2-step correction adds a heavier cutting stage before the finishing polish, for paint with deeper or heavier defects. It is available by request, so ask during your consultation.

What it costs compared with what it saves

Correction is skilled, time-consuming work, but it is often far less than a repaint, and it keeps the factory finish. Several AquaLux clients came in thinking their car needed new paint. One reviewer was told by a dealership that their Lexus needed repainting, and another said, “We saved thousands of dollars on a new paint job.” Their full reviews are below.

Corrected paint also photographs and shows better if you sell or trade the car in.

If you plan to coat, correction is already included

A ceramic coating seals in whatever is underneath it, swirls included. That is why every Ceramic Coating Package includes decontamination and paint correction before the coating goes on. If a coating is the goal, you do not need to book correction separately. See How much does ceramic coating cost? for how coating quotes work.

How to keep paint from swirling again

Most swirls come back from washing, so the habits matter more than any product:

  • Skip automatic brush washes
  • Hand wash with clean mitts and two buckets
  • Dry with clean microfiber or forced air, never a used towel
  • Protect the finish with a sealant or, for years of protection, a ceramic coating

The Monthly Exterior Maintenance plan keeps a corrected car looking freshly detailed. There is more in How to care for a ceramic-coated car.

“First of all, if I was able to leave MORE than 5 stars, I would! Landon at Aqualux went above and beyond what he said he would do. We thought our Lexus was in need of a new paint job, even though it was only a 2015, it was in California and the paint / clear coat was poorly maintained. We even took it to Lexus to have them "detail" it and they said it needed to be repainted. Landon didn't promise the sun, moon, and stars, but he did UNDERSELL himself which I appreciated. He definitely under promised and OVER delivered! We had scratches, oxidation, and clear coat degradation and Landon was able to correct ALL of it. You have a client for life!”

“The way Landon sees your car vs a "normal" set of eyes is what will take your car to the next level. I couldn't really see the swirls, but after Landon pointed out all the paint correction needed at a certain angle with light, I knew how well he knows his stuff…”

FAQ

Quick answers

Does paint correction remove all scratches?

Not always. A 1-step polish removes roughly 50 to 75% of swirls and scratches. A 2-step correction is available by request for deeper defects. Scratches through the clear coat cannot be polished out.

How much does paint correction cost in McKinney?

The Platinum Polishing Package (1-step) starts at $800 for cars, $900 for small SUVs and $1,000 for large SUVs and trucks. Prices vary with paint condition, so a consultation gives the most accurate estimate.

How long does paint correction take?

Plan on 5 to 7 hours for the Platinum Polishing Package.

Does paint correction harm the paint?

Done properly, it removes only a very thin layer of clear coat to level defects. That is why the paint should be inspected first and the polish matched to its condition, which is how Landon approaches every car.

Should I coat the car after correction?

A coating locks in the corrected finish for years and makes washing easier. The Ceramic Coating Package already includes paint correction.
